Degrees and Certifications:
Highly Qualified teacher, K-6 B.S. degree in Education, Hearing Impairment M.A. degree in Special Education
Mrs. Lara Riley
My first teaching job ever was at Helen Keller School. I began in 1995 with the youngest class of hearing impaired students, and absolutely LOVED it! In 2009 my husband’s job moved us to Baldwin county, and while there - I did teach a couple of years in a public elementary school. But my heart missed HKS. In 2015, my family was able to move back to the area, and I was blessed to be hired back to my first love (educationally speaking). Overall, I’ve taught students with multiple disabilities for over 20 years, from as young as 3 years old, to as old as 16.
Personally, I’m married with a 15 year-old daughter, who’s now learning to drive (scary stuff). We live in Chelsea, Alabama...thankful to be nearby to both my husband’s and my families. I enjoy reading Christian fiction, geocaching, making small craft projects...and ending each day with a quiet bubble bath. :-)
Aside from teaching (you know all teachers have extra duties, right?), I also
- oversee the annual yearbook, with 4 other HKS coworkers (our AWESOME publisher is https://yearbooks.picaboo.com/)
- coordinate the website, with one other HKS coworker https://www.aidb.org/hks
- manage the Facebook page, with 3 other HKS coworkers & 3 more in AIDB’s OIA https://www.facebook.com/AIDBHelenKellerSchool/
And just to share materials I’ve created, I have a page on https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ (you can find me as “MD Time Savers”).
Yes, I do stay busy! And if you’re looking for educational websites that I recommend, click here.
Below is my class from this school year (2019-2020)...we’re having lots of fun with our Lego theme.
