Resolution: Helen Keller School of Alabama Recognized as an Alabama Green Ribbon School
During their May 2025 meeting, the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind Board of Trustees voted in favor of the following resolution honoring the Helen Keller School of Alabama as an Alabama Green Ribbon School.
WHEREAS, Helen Keller School of Alabama (HKS) has been recognized as an Alabama Green Ribbon School, and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Green Ribbon School Award recognizes schools that are innovative in their sustainability practices and environmental education by reducing the environmental impact of the school, improving health and wellness for students, and providing effective environmental education, and
WHEREAS, at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the HKS transition program started an on-campus recycling program utilizing student workers that is designed to combine education, physical activities, and social skills, and
WHEREAS, the new program began teaching students about the importance of recycling and protecting our environmental resources, how to efficiently procure and separate materials, and how to independently navigate the school campus, which are all important skills that will translate into their post-graduation work environments, and
WHEREAS, with great pride in the program, HKS successfully applied to the Alabama State Department of Education to be named an Alabama Green Ribbon School.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind Board of Trustees congratulates Helen Keller School of Alabama for its recognition as an Alabama Green Ribbon School.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Amy Shelly and the Helen Keller school of Alabama; and a copy be spread across the minutes of this meeting.
