Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multi-disabled, and their families. The GEER II Assistive Technology Mentors provide training, both locally and via various distance learning technologies, to individuals and groups across Alabama who have vision, hearing and/or dual sensory loss. They will be based at E. H. Gentry Facility or at one of the ten Regional Centers. The mentors will be responsible for curriculum development and working on various delivery platforms. They will develop lesson plans, attend and initiate consumer staffing, and document attendance and progress.

These Mentors must have a passion for working with students, staff, parents, and community partners. From assessment to goal achievement, these individuals will document services in a timely manner. Communication with students, staff, and our partnering organizations is a vital part of this position, with strong writing, one-on-one communication, and public relations skills required.



You will be vital to ensuring that AIDB’s culture of inclusion is reinforced and that students feel connected, recognized, and proud to be part of the E. H. Gentry team.



  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be an individual with hearing or dual sensory loss and be a proficient user of assistive technology for individuals who are deaf or deafblind.
  • A willingness to learn and understand methodologies used to educate individuals with hearing or dual sensory loss.
  • Assist with training of consumers with hearing loss.
  • Must possess computer skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Google Suite.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively through several modes of communication.



  • Ensure student safety, welfare, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Encourage participation.
  • Observe participants for appropriate behavior.
  • Report student concerns to staff.
  • Communicate clearly with staff and students.
  • Provide instruction to students in the areas prescribed by the instructional supervisors.
  • Monitor classroom and student activities.
  • Make and record observations of individual students as assigned, including but not limited to attendance, tardiness, inappropriate social behavior, dress, or other factors to monitor individual progress.
  • Complete necessary documentation for tracking a student's progress.
  • Submit a written monthly progress report on each student.
  • Assist in developing curriculum and instructional materials.
  • As a representative of AIDB, follow AIDB policies and procedures and set an appropriate example for students, consumers, and other staff.
  • Dress and conduct oneself in such a manner as to set a good example for our students.

  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.


SALARY:      $20.00 Hourly:


Direct deposit is required.

This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.



This position is funded by a grant award, funded by revenue generated, necessary for compliance or provides direct service delivery.
