The Speech Therapy Department serves all AIDB campus programs. Nationally certified speech-language pathologists (SLPs), using an extensive testing library, provide evaluations to determine each student's areas of strengths and weaknesses, and to establish possible goals for therapy. Therapy is then provided as determined by each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Speech therapy at AIDB is never boring. During the one-on-one sessions, small group therapy, inclusively in the classroom or on field trips, therapists utilize games, iPad apps, and “uniquely crafted” therapy tools to engage and encourage students in working to attain the goals established in the IEP. The SLPs attend trainings often to sharpen their tools such as the annual training visit from the nationally acclaimed Moog Center for Deaf Education from St. Louis, Missouri. Programs such as the Alabama School for the Deaf Listening and Spoken Language Preschool program, also supported by the Moog Center’s trainings, are also served by the SLPs.
The SLPs are available to perform evaluations and to provide outreach services to public school systems through AIDB’s Outreach program as well as through AIDB’s Admissions Department. Utilizing their vast array of knowledge and experience with “best practice” methods, the department welcomes the opportunity to assist school systems with evaluations and classroom techniques to enable a student to reach the goals established within an IEP. The resources of the Speech Therapy Department are often combined with AIDB’s Audiology Department to address the specific needs of the students for routine staffing/training opportunities, and for specific listening device consultation. Collaboration with AIDB’s Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy departments occurs often as well. AIDB’s Speech Department is a favorite among college students for intern placement, Clinical Fellow experiences, and observations under licensed SLPs.
