Helen Keller School of Alabama Honored for Innovation, Sustainability, and Educational Excellence
TALLADEGA, Ala. - Helen Keller School of Alabama (HKS), a part of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB), has earned two prestigious statewide recognitions for its commitment to sustainability, student engagement, and academic innovation.
HKS was recently named an Alabama Green Ribbon School by the Alabama State Department of Education. The Green Ribbon designation highlights schools that demonstrate leadership in reducing environmental impact, improving student and staff wellness, and delivering effective environmental education. At the start of the 2024–2025 school year, HKS launched a student-led recycling initiative through its transition program. This hands-on initiative not only teaches students the importance of environmental stewardship but also integrates physical activity, social skills, and vocational training by having students collect, sort, and manage recyclables across campus. These real-world skills are designed to prepare students for life after graduation and reflect the school’s holistic approach to education.
In addition to this achievement, HKS has also been selected as a 2024 Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS) School of Distinction for its groundbreaking Emerging Eagles program. This program was chosen from among 234 nominated schools across Alabama, with only 32 receiving the School of Distinction honor. The CLAS Banner School program, established in 2001, recognizes schools that exemplify innovation and exceptional service to students. HKS was formally recognized during the CLAS Schools of Distinction Awards Luncheon on May 5, 2025, in Prattville, Alabama.
“These honors reflect the extraordinary commitment of our faculty, staff, and students to innovation, inclusion, and excellence,” said HKS Principal Amy Shelly. “We are incredibly proud of what our school community has achieved.”
