The Great AIDB Bake Off (Grade 9th-12th)

Students will be given specific instructions in cooking techniques and adaptations in order to learn to prepare meals in the kitchen, including but not limited to: how to use modern kitchen appliances, pre-cooking, cleaning prep areas, using adapted kitchen supplies, handling raw meat, storing items, and reading a recipe etc.

Students will have lessons and activities over the weekend, such as icebreakers, socialization, and self-determination games, fashionable attire, grooming and hairstyle, dance lessons, and meal time etiquette and conversation. The weekend ends with a formal dance.

A one-day course for parents and students. There will be resources provided for parents during this course to help them understand their child’s limitless potential while students spend time gaining additional instruction related to concepts such as self-determination, self-advocacy, career exploration, and socialization skills.

These are highly intensive courses that focus on compensatory skills needed by learners with visual impairments to access the regular curriculum. Popular topics are technology, maximizing the use of low vision, and math or science tools and concepts.

Kitchen Chemistry (Grade 9th-12th)

This course is designed as an introduction to molecular gastronomy. Molecular gastronomy is the scientific discipline concerned with the physical and chemical transformations that occur during cooking. Students will learn the basics of chemistry while practicing cooking skills, such as measuring, mixing, boiling, and baking.

Marvelous World of Stem (Grade 6th-12th)

Students will work with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) instruction during this course. By asking questions and having students work in groups to problem-solve possible solutions, we will build student motivation and engagement in rigorous academic content while having MARVELOUS fun!

The STP teacher/case manager will coordinate with the local/district O&M teacher to develop specific goals and objectives for this course. Lessons and activities could include: bus travel, busy downtown one-way/two-way streets, complex lighted intersections, large indoor/outdoor malls with escalators, large buildings with multiple offices/elevators/revolving doors, and a large university campus.

This course will focus on fictional writing and is designed to focus on instruction in the writing process, elements of writing, and peer editing and revision. Students will provide a writing sample on a given topic in order to assess their current writing level and progress.

Students will be introduced to outdoor learning experiences. Some examples of possible experiences: outdoor science projects, guided nature walks, and interacting with horses. The underlying goal of this course is for students to challenge themselves with new experiences, assess risk-taking, and build awareness about their strengths.

Students will be introduced to a variety of self-care and health options. Lessons and activities will include topics such as stress management, relaxation resources, self-care, nutritional choices, and non-visual sensory experiences (example: sounds and aroma).

School year short-term program courses are designed to provide Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) support for academic level students who are working on or close to grade level. There is no cost to districts or families for the course(s). Please go to our website for specific information about the classes and how to apply.
Expanded Core Curriculum Classes are courses that focus on skills needed by learners with visual impairments, which may be difficult to address in the regular academic day. Topics include low vision tools and strategies, mobility, independent living, recreation/leisure, personal and interpersonal growth, pre-driving skills with low vision, self-advocacy, and others. The ability to learn alongside other visually impaired students and adults can be a life-changing opportunity that enhances self-esteem and leads to greater motivation in approaching life’s personal and academic challenges.
Individualized instruction may take the form of distance instruction or student-teacher visits to our campus. Short-Term Programs teachers work collaboratively with local Teachers of Visually Impaired (TVI) to come up with an instructional plan to meet an instructional need that is not offered in our regularly scheduled classes. Most of the time, students participate via Zoom while remaining in their local community. Instruction may be self-paced, real-time with an instructor, or a combination of self-paced and real-time instruction.
